Hello Karen, using a drone to aid with study sounds like a fantastic idea, but I want to point out to you and your readers that, at the moment, the FAA does not contemplate operating a drone for investigation as a hobby or recreational use. We've had a few UAV based projects right here at Oregon State University and have had to apply for COAs, which is not a uncomplicated approach, and I doubt a DJI Phantom quadcopter would qualify.
